estate and property maps
Introduction
There is no single guide or location for private maps, as they may have been deposited as an individual item, as part of a survey, or within a collection.
Though many appear in our on-line catalogue, one needs to be careful and thorough in searching, as a map may be described as a plan, map or survey. The majority of indexing at Shropshire Archives is by parish name, so it is vital to first check by parish. Early maps may use a Manorial name, so check the Manorial Documents Register on The National Archives website to find the parish.
At Shropshire Archives we have lists of maps which have been microfiched as a conservation measure. There are also index cards for estate maps, but neither cards nor fiche lists are comprehensive. Always ask a member of staff for further guidance and to check in which family collection you may need to search as, while some collections can be searched online, others may need to be searched on the staff accessions database.
