official and administrative maps
Introduction to parliamentary deposited plans and other specialised maps
There are very varied and diverse maps and plans in official records held at Shropshire Archives.
The most extensive set comprises the deposited plans of canals and railways which are catalogued and listed – see QR section on Search Room shelves. Therefore, if the area you are researching is near the current or previous route of a canal, railway or road bridge, it is worth searching this section.
Just a small part of the collection have been microfilmed as a conservation measure, so most are only accessible as original documents in the Search Room. Some of these documents are in very poor condition, as they were working drawings, and so access may be restricted.
Detailed plans, such as a drainage, highway or stopping up orders can occasionally be found amongst Quarter Sessions documents. If you are fortunate enough to find a plan in this section, documentary evidence such as a book of reference may also have survived.
